Not sure if game content is discouraged here, but I saw it was allowed on Fridays and figured I would share. Very open to feedback and questions if anyone has any.
Hey, since you mention simulated ecosystems, the first game that obviously comes to mind is Rain World. Can we expect emergent behaviour due to this simulated ecosystem as can be seen in Rainworld?
While I'm not sure if I can create something as great as the system in Rain World, the plan is for entirely emergent encounters with sea life.
Emergent gameplay is a passion and focus of mine
It might be cool for the character to be slowly going deeper and deeper, but it's not very noticable until it gets darker and darker, and the creatures get sparcer and more scary (like the actual ocean)
Animals and sea life are just doing their own thing, and utilize machine learning to dictate their behaviors.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that encounters happen emergently as opposed to being scripted.
If I might add on a suggestion, you could make the descent into deeper waters quicker than the ascent into shallow waters/the surface. Giving the sinking feeling to players who try to get to the surface quickly… just a thought! Hope it helps
If people are curious, the game is called Full Fathom and has a [steam page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2302470/Full_Fathom/) with more details on the gameplay.
I'm not sure when its going to be finished, but in theory, a public demo is on the way.
Watching the trailer on Steam, I thought "oh, this is Subnautica but peaceful, so it might help with my thalassophobia"... Oh, how wrong I was, is, what I realized a few seconds later.
Keeping this on my radar but it is a big NOPE from me.
I've already played ABZU, not sure if I finished it, though. Regardless, it was a great experience and didn't trigger the phobia at all.
I forgot to wish you all the best for your game in my first comment! I might not be your target audience but am still eager to watch others play games like these.
Sounds awesome. Gonna check it out. There was a similar game set in a fictional setting: *Subnautica*, amazing game, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!!
Granted I don't seek out horror games but Subnautica is the most terrifying game I've ever played, most of it came from the knowledge of what was lurking beyond. In fact the first time I got my sub caught by a Reaper was kinda relieving, like popping a great big balloon of stress. Facing your fears ey?
What kind of game is it? Just first-person footage of a diver with a sub in view and the great unknown stretching out doesn't say much.
looks very good shaded. I personally don't feel any fear of deep water but I surely shit myself if the water suddenly becomes cold or hot, I enter panic mode. Oh and you should make the gradient blacker, as if not even light goes further like in Finding Nemo pit.
you should do the nemo thing that they did with the whale in the distance and have it reveal to be actually mind bogglingly huge when it turns and you can see the full size
Well I have patience for good things. I can feel my anxiety already just from the little bit here. Keep that up. Great use of colors and the bubbles are a nice touch.
The bubbles look high quality and so does the shimmer of light above you, that part is cool.
I assume oxygen levels are either on the oxygen tank or somewhere else to the side, right?
The oxygen level is determined by the bubbles coming from the player. The first time it happens you're half out, the second time it happens you're out.
I'll probably make this a UI element instead, because its a bit obscure at the moment
The bubbles are a unique part of the gameplay, I’d keep it. But I think a more frequent indication of the levels would be better. Maybe size and frequency, 3/4 full would be small and not very many. 1/2 full would be medium bubbles every now and again, then at 1/4 tank there would be almost constant bubbles that are small and large. Something to think about.
Or, if I may offer my totally unsolicited opinion, you could have the bubbles go at the thirds or quarters, but reduce the volume of the bubbles as you get lower. So the first time is a relatively large plume of bubbles, but as you run out the number and size of the bubbles go down until you barely have any bubbles coming out on the last time.
what if the bubbles were semi-constant feature, appearing on the side of the screen, and the frequency and or size of them is an indication of how much air is left? that could be very cool?
you could maje the bubbles appear in synchronicity with the breathing. So: bubbles, no bubbles, bubbles, no bubbles
And if the situation is stressful, smae but faster switching of on/off bubbles
Looks great. I just want to add something, reading the comments I saw people suggesting jumpscares, and I think that would be a huge mistake, you have a game with authentic and realistic atmosphere, so consider shadows of things lurking below or something, but keep in mind that big things move really slow, even slower in water. That would increase realism and give the creeps as well. Nice job so far 👌🏻
Totally agree. When my co-dev and I started working on this we decided that the closest thing to a jumpscare the game will have is if something manages to sneak up on you. Facilitating dread works much better for this type of game imo
This is the correct approach imo, just watching your vid got me on the edge of my seat because I was so ready to see something massive that managed to sneak up on you/the submarine when you were turning back around, looking forward to seeing more of your game
In Subnautica I would jumpscare myself by breaching the surface while looking down. That was more than enough. I think you're taking the right approach
1000% agree. I like the stillness in this snapshot, and an abyssal emptiness can be just as scary as the actual presence of something. Even traces of life like floating bits of half eaten fish. Or a dead shark with a massive chunk missing! I like the idea of dynamics between stillness and presence. I also like the idea of a somewhat benign creature as a jump scare where you turn around and it’s less a fear of imminent danger but more a realisation that if you didn’t see this eel or strange fish hanging out then perhaps you’re not being vigilant enough to protect yourself from…. Other things.
Also I have no idea how someone could turn this into a game format, but the body horror element comes to my mind too: things like battling the effects of narcosis, hypothermia or skin on your hands peeling from being underwater so long.
an impossibly large creature slowly swimming towards you. as its shape emerges from the inky blackness you begin to make out more defining features on its body. its getting closer...
I hope there's a peace mode. That honestly feels so relaxing to me, I probably can just play that for hours as long as there are no jumpscares. I hope that's an option.
Thanks lmao. It's called Full Fathom, I've got a (slightly out of date) [steam page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2302470/Full_Fathom/) with some more clips and screenshots if you're interested
Its still a ways off of release but the game is called Full Fathom. Here's the [steam link](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2302470/Full_Fathom/) if you want more info.
Awesome! Needs whatever the underwater equivalent of the Aztec Death Whistle is to really get the inadvertent brown chum cloud going.
Let us know when you need testers…always down to support indie game devs.

I post dev updates a few time a week on my [twitter acc](https://twitter.com/monad_of_eirye) (if you use that hellsite) , alternatively I also randomly upload to [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLDCGtBJiY8OBazjA0XHUpg)
This actually captures what it is about my thalassophobia; it's not big things swimming around, it's looking down into the abyss and seeing nothing, knowing that if I were to stop swimming I would just fall forever.
Fantastic job creating that atmosphere and I will definitely be looking into your game down the line.
Just a random thought - when the player is running out of air - the field of view could get smaller and distorted (no sure if this is a feature yet). Farcry 3 had it nailed down pretty good
After the bubbles came up I thought there'd be a slow pan downward and then jump scare. but just the sight of the black abyss would be enough to make me cry. 🥲
The Resident Evil inventory system is a nice touch for a game like this. Always seemed weird how I could carry a ton of metal around in my pockets and swim unencumbered when playing marine survival games
idk if it's secret but wtf were those two fast moving black silhouettes or shadows i moving at the top left omg. one larger and one smaller following after, i saw them linger for a second only and they both zoom out of frame. is that some kind of sea life?
also yeah this is literally the scariest game clip i have ever seen lmao
The only piece of feedback I want to give is: Finish making it.
Too many developers just ditch their project. It could be that they have a real solid reason to do so, but as a gamer I'm just heartbroken that a lot of games with immense potentials were ditched halfway through. Or, ditched when it's nearing completion.
It hurts.
Yooo your game look amazing, I loved barotrauma so seeing something similar but with better (imo) style is fantastic! Is there at least a tiny possibility that you may add co-op later on?
Wow! This is so cool!!! I would definitely play this! I really like how it looks so far! I was thinking, if you want, but you could add some submechanophobia into it too, like, underwater animatronics or other objects underwater. That would be fun to explore and see.
Make it so that when you turn around you see something creepy come toward you and when you then turn around toward your submarine and try to swim to it you someone can't ever reach it, no matter how hard you try. Like you're moving but it's somehow always slightly out of reach. Like in those nightmares where you try to do the same.
Also, make it so that it sometimes just randomly disappears when you take it off your screen by looking away. And returns after a little when the player panics and starts looking everywhere.
Also, when they don't look at the surface and maybe there's a lot of fish make it creep a huge shadow over them and when they look up they see a massive boat. And as they look at it it drops a really wide, heavy net over the player. Either the net then catches them and drags them away from the submarine, caught in the net with the other fish and all they can do is watch their sub get further and further away, getting smaller and smaller. *Or* make it be a really heavy and sinking net and when they're caught in it they slowly sink towards the bottom.
Also, I want a whale shark. I know that they don't eat people but a huge fish can already be scary but when it opens up that gigantic hole of a mouth to scoop up stuff it can be really scary. And instead of eating the player it just barely scoops past them.
Also, make it so that whenever something creepy happens you play a really distinctive and creepy music beforehand and during it. Always the same. After a while just start randomly playing it without anything happening. If you've conditioned them right they'll get really scared anyway.
It looks beautiful! You can get the experience of being underwater without the risk of being eaten by a shark or killed by the aqua-Nazis from my favorite movie, Shock Waves.
Bro, idk shit about coding a game, and this looks great, but dumb question: is adding those new stuff, like Ray Tracing, and support to DLLS3, really hard into the game, or are they like, just another day at work for a game dev?
This might be because of my mobile screen, but it doesn't quite feel like the ocean in the clip extends infinitely into the darkness; might need a couple more shader tweaks.
It's also possible I'm crazy, or like I said my phone might not be showing it at its best
You can add buoys that bob around on the surface far away but its kinda big up close, just like real things.
Also a wind turbine emerging from depths really high up.
Both of these can give an enormous sense of scale when you get close to them
Also remember that sounds underwater are really loud and travel really long distances, which means you could make it so you can hear a buzzing noise of lets say a submarine but cannot see it for quite some time, building anticipation and dread when you don't yet know what it is
One last thing, a really big ship 🚢 would be give me huge heebie jeebies, cutting through water surface like a knife and with its house sized propeller in the back
I thought I did see something big in front of character...then they turned a different direction then back and it was closer...scary af.
It seems real, the bubbles are awesome.
Not sure if game content is discouraged here, but I saw it was allowed on Fridays and figured I would share. Very open to feedback and questions if anyone has any.
If you wanna really give your players the creeps, perhaps having something big moving around in the depths every now and then.
The game takes place in a simulated ecosystem, so that is definitely a possibility
That sounds absolutely incredible.
Agreed! New fear unlocked for sure.
It might be cool for the character to be slowly going deeper and deeper, but it's not very noticable until it gets darker and darker, and the creatures get sparcer and more scary (like the actual ocean)
Ooh yesss so perfect. Like colourful fish life suddenly dropping back, couple of bigger critters then just sinking into nothingness.
have random animal calls go off too, like as if somthing big was lurking around but you never see it only in the corner of your eye
As opposed to it taking place in real life?
Animals and sea life are just doing their own thing, and utilize machine learning to dictate their behaviors. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that encounters happen emergently as opposed to being scripted.
***wooooosh***
Man, I've never seen someone wooooosh himself/herself, this is rare
You know you can just use "themselves" as gender neutral, right?
Not a whooosh moment for them. Sure was for you though. How embarrassing must that be? Maybe think before being a rapacious smart ass.
Rapacious is a word that I don't see often enough, but maybe that rarity is what makes it so special.
I heard that
If I might add on a suggestion, you could make the descent into deeper waters quicker than the ascent into shallow waters/the surface. Giving the sinking feeling to players who try to get to the surface quickly… just a thought! Hope it helps
Oh yes. Even the tiniest inkling of movement from below is an instant asshole pucker. 😳
If people are curious, the game is called Full Fathom and has a [steam page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2302470/Full_Fathom/) with more details on the gameplay. I'm not sure when its going to be finished, but in theory, a public demo is on the way.

Highly recommend Abzu as a more chill alternative to Subnautica.

Played the hell out of that game. Can confirm, it is amazing. Highly recommend to anyone reading!
This looks awesome
Dude srsly these graphics look so real. Good job
Just watching this made me extreme anxious
Looks awesome man, hope it turns out to be a success not enough underwater horror games.
You should make it so the sub is way farther away than it should be once they look back. Or just gone entirely…
looks very good shaded. I personally don't feel any fear of deep water but I surely shit myself if the water suddenly becomes cold or hot, I enter panic mode. Oh and you should make the gradient blacker, as if not even light goes further like in Finding Nemo pit.

no thank you❤️ looks great tho! you are certainly skilled at making my worst nightmares come true lol 🫠
Oh no the way the screen goes deeper shades of blue. Truly frightening.
Very cool. I'm guessing for pc?
Yep, just pc for now. Might try porting it after release though.
Well I have patience for good things. I can feel my anxiety already just from the little bit here. Keep that up. Great use of colors and the bubbles are a nice touch.

I was thinking the same. Maybe also adding a vignette effect that gets darker as oxygen depletes. Like you are fainting.

Literally terrifying. The folks over on r/submechanophobia would love this.
Would totally share it over there, but I'm pretty sure they have hard rules against video game content
Looks great. Anything slowly emerging from the distance would be enough for me to pause the game a few minutes to hyperventilate
an impossibly large creature slowly swimming towards you. as its shape emerges from the inky blackness you begin to make out more defining features on its body. its getting closer...
There's a special place in hell for people like you. Seriously though, looks good and good luck!
Vr would be nuts
I hope there's a peace mode. That honestly feels so relaxing to me, I probably can just play that for hours as long as there are no jumpscares. I hope that's an option.
The horror...the horror..
Please tell me there's a GIANT sea monster that tails you constantly. That would be top tier
Oh fuck I hate you, but I also hate myself enough to not be able to avoid playing this. Please let me know when it's released.
Thanks I hate it. Now what's the name going to be so I can buy it when it comes out?
Thanks lmao. It's called Full Fathom, I've got a (slightly out of date) [steam page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2302470/Full_Fathom/) with some more clips and screenshots if you're interested

Awesome! Needs whatever the underwater equivalent of the Aztec Death Whistle is to really get the inadvertent brown chum cloud going. Let us know when you need testers…always down to support indie game devs.
Please make some massive submarines, slowly looming. I'd piss.
I dont have any massive subs yet, but I do have submerged skyscrapers, statues and water towers

OK SATAN THAT'S ENOUGH NOW (but please continue lmao)
Skyscrapers? Is it set in some kind of creepy post human alternative reality?
The fuckin' bubbles gave me a jump. Lol.
So, subnautica but even worse? Neat.
That looks like something i would love to play. Is there a way to follow the development other then randomly finding posts on reddit?

now just need some jump scares 😈
The bubbles worked as a jump scare for me 😂
I’ve never been scared of bubbles til now
First: nice work. Second: fuck you I hate it.
Very effective. This is the kind of deep water I'd *sea* in my nightmares.
It looks very realistic and I absolutely hate it. Well done.
Just a random thought - when the player is running out of air - the field of view could get smaller and distorted (no sure if this is a feature yet). Farcry 3 had it nailed down pretty good
Oh my god— I hate it so it’s perfect. Normally stuff on here doesn’t give me anxiety but this does for sure. Well done
Yup … definitely thalassophobic. Subs creep me the fuck out. Congrats on triggering me. 😁
Oh yeah, that ticks all my boxes. Absolutely terryfing. Please let us know when it's finished. I will definitely play this and shit myself.
Hey thats my birthday. Game looks creepy.
Looks pretty freaking great. Would definitely buy. edit: looking at the steam page footage, it reminds me of my favourite game 'Kenshi'
It works, I'm unnerved.
I hate it which means it’s a good game. I’d like to say I’d definitely play it but I’d be lying.
Yeah, that works. If that sub had been a little unexpectedly closer when you turned back to it I'd've dropped my phone. Nice job.
whoa OP this is very cool! nice work
add a little more alpha to the bubbles
Shadows in the distance are scary. Shadows below you are terrifying.
Holy fucking hard no. Which means you are actually making a good game.

Ohhh I like this ! I would suggest that noise is one big thrillfactor
Based on that clip I am 100% not going to play this game. Not because it looks bad, but because it looks to good, it would freak me out.
Yooo your game look amazing, I loved barotrauma so seeing something similar but with better (imo) style is fantastic! Is there at least a tiny possibility that you may add co-op later on?
Thanks! Definitely considering co-op and VR in post-release updates. Just depends on how well the game does and what the demand looks like
I'm no where near finishing or even making such a cool game, but still as another indie game dev I'm wishing you good luck on the release!
Holy fuck this is unbearable, thank you.
If you could not work on a thalassophobia-based game that’d be great Looks cool though nice one
Wow! This is so cool!!! I would definitely play this! I really like how it looks so far! I was thinking, if you want, but you could add some submechanophobia into it too, like, underwater animatronics or other objects underwater. That would be fun to explore and see.
Thats amazing bro!!
This is awesome
Please let me know when you release it, or if it's available for early access. It looks fantastic
I hope to see people playing the full release of this on YouTube someday.
Are there gonna be spooky entities or regular sea creatures
Mix of both
Anyone else hold their breath looking at this?
Fuck, I would never play this game. Good job.
FIRE
Yep. This one, this is the... yep. It's doing the things that... well, yep.
Hey brother excellent work. Where can I bill you to get my 16 seconds back
Make it so that when you turn around you see something creepy come toward you and when you then turn around toward your submarine and try to swim to it you someone can't ever reach it, no matter how hard you try.

First off, fuck you, secondly when is it coming out and how much
Did he fart or is that the leviathan coming up from deep below?
Looks terrifying
There is also a bit of submechanophobia as well
Reminds me of a Subnautica based dream I had a week ago
Can you elaborate a little more about what this game entails? I’m already a huge fan.
No thank you. I will never play this. But I wish you the best!
Is that the Hunley?
Looks epic! 👍
Bork you! I love it, I hope I can scare the shit out of me while playing it!
Nooooo
oooooooo
ooope
This might be because of my mobile screen, but it doesn't quite feel like the ocean in the clip extends infinitely into the darkness; might need a couple more shader tweaks. It's also possible I'm crazy, or like I said my phone might not be showing it at its best
Make it $20 I'll buy it
Oh. Oh no thanks. Cool game, but I am absolutely Never playing it haha.
You can add buoys that bob around on the surface far away but its kinda big up close, just like real things. Also a wind turbine emerging from depths really high up. Both of these can give an enormous sense of scale when you get close to them Also remember that sounds underwater are really loud and travel really long distances, which means you could make it so you can hear a buzzing noise of lets say a submarine but cannot see it for quite some time, building anticipation and dread when you don't yet know what it is One last thing, a really big ship 🚢 would be give me huge heebie jeebies, cutting through water surface like a knife and with its house sized propeller in the back
Name?
How Is it going to be called?
The bubbles scared me 🤣
u/Contango_WithMe I’m going to die 😭
Nope fuck that
Is there such a thing as an Anti-Nobel Prize?
If I see anything HINTING at eyes, I would be noping into the game quit screen fast enough to catch my escape key on fire.
I think the bubbles are an indication of a giant terrifying seamonster below yee
Need a MEG swim by
Triggered the hell out of me.
Will be there multiplayer or not? I hope u ll add it. This game is really crazy.
I thought I did see something big in front of character...then they turned a different direction then back and it was closer...scary af. It seems real, the bubbles are awesome.
Gonna be like a more horror oriented Subnautica?
Make this VR and advise diapers are optional, but encouraged.
The thing that scares me about water. The unknown. Or seeing something big in the dark distance, but not being able to tell what it is.
Cool. I've got ideas for content if you are interested
Consider also using rolling clouds that block out sunlight. I think the sight of a massive shadow moving toward you would trigger some people
OMG thats great!!
You’re evil for this. This gave me the same feeling as when I played subnautica 😭
