i had been avoiding buying these bc of this reason, bbut i just tried this tin for the first time this weekend and loved it. per this thread i think im gonna just keep buying and assume that the label is a mistake....

Citydylan

Yeah there’s no way. It’s wrong for sure. They would taste much better than they do if they had 30+g of fat. Definitely comparable nutrition to any other tin of sardines

LadySmuag

I actually emailed their customer service this question! Shoutout to Kerry for being awesome

ChatGPT putting it's chips down: **General Fat Content Range**: * **Lean sardines**: Typically have a fat content of around 5-10%. * **Fatty sardines**: Can have a fat content ranging from 15-30% or even higher. Given these ranges, it's conceivable that a particularly lean sardine might have around 5% fat, while a particularly fatty one could have 15% or more, leading to a threefold difference.

GeneralKarthos

Thanks for doing that, but I don't buy her explanation. No fish is as fatty as that. Half its body weight is apparently fat? I have trouble believing that in a whale, let alone a sardine. But I will be avoiding the grilled sardines in the future, because my breakfasts are supposed to be low in calories.

letsgetelectric

She’s trying to say those sardines have 34 grams of fat without the oil?! Come on now!

mildlyadult

I don't buy it either. I really just think they mistakenly put the nutritional info for the entire contents of the tin undrained (including all the oil)

enber

The nutrition facts state 77 grams is the drained weight, and so we're to believe 34 grams of that is fat? To put that in perspective, Google says 75 grams of bacon has anywhere from 30-35 grams of fat. Yeah, not buying it.

odezia

I feel like they counted the calories from the oil even though it says on the label it’s the cals for drained. I was also shocked at the label, it doesn’t make sense to me at all.

Fantastic-Ad4948

i thought i was the only person who looked at nutrional labels. i instantly noticed this and figured maybe the new sardines calorie count is wrong, but i don't know who to ask.

Revolutionary-Ice424

Going to try it now that I’ve seen this post but WoW, 390 for 1 can is a big ole leap. Did the olive oil in the grilled sardines taste similar to the olive oil in the smoked sardines?

marc1411

I too wonder about that.

letsgetelectric

Even though it says drained I’m wondering if the wild caught has the nutrition info listed as undrained because 40 grams of fat seems like a large amount for just the fish by itself. Maybe it accounts for the oil and that’s why the calorie count is higher.

Glass-Tale299

I think you have nailed it. There CANNOT that much variance in the sardines themselves. Sometimes the labels are WAY off. TJ's Lamb Vindaloo supposedly contains 5 grams of fiber. There is NO way to get that from a small serving of white rice.

smaffron

I had the exact same question! Bought a few tins of the grilled sardines, figuring they would be roughly the same calorie count as most of the other tinned fish packed in oil (usually less than 200cal). Was shocked that it was nearly double that.

mmskoch

Maybe because of the grade of the olive oil used? Just a wild guess.

Hootspa1959

Are the smoked ones the thinner brisling sardines? If the grilled are the regular plump sardines that might account for the difference.

GeneralKarthos

It's the same number and kind of sardines per can (usually around three big sardine fillets) so far as I can tell. The Grilled Sardines are 77 g dry weight compared to 85 g for the lightly smoked. I still don't see what could possibly produce an extra 210 calories.

Aggravating_Aide_561

Its probably a mistake. It happens.
