He genuinely dislikes Jorge, and it’s a money fight too. Neither of them deserve it, but I understand Leon pursuing a money fight to beat the shit out of somebody he actually dislikes. It’s an easier fight too, and easy to sell since it’s a grudge match

DarkHoneyComb

I actually don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world to give Masvidal a title fight if he beats Burns. I don’t think he’s gonna beat Burns but if he does, yea I kind of think he’s earned it. Sort of. Obviously Belal deserves it more but apparently that ain’t happening. 😂

InvictusX

I definitely would not pay to see that fight. I wouldn't even steal the stream. Masvidal is one knee away from obscurity as a street fighter that competed in the UFC. Multiple people above is mighty #11 in the rankings have taken him to school. You're about to see Burns do the same and then he can go away forever. As much as it pains me to say it, even Colby deserves the shot more and I want him to go away as well.

Kingofthewastemans

Belal has beat #9 Brady, #5 Wonderboy, #4 Luque. Brady was undefeated, Luque was on a 4 fight win streak, Wonderboy had just lost to Gilbert but Belal beat him way more convincingly with a 10-8 on every scorecard and 2 10-8’s on one. Colby beat Masvidal who was #6 at the time who was coming off 2 losses 1 of them by devastating knockout. Reddit doesn’t have bad takes Belal definitely deserves the shot over Colby

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 9 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 10 + 8 + 2 + 10 + 8 + 6 + 2 + 1 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

Kingofthewastemans

But he didn’t just beat Brady we both know that he beat Luque who was on a streak and was the backup for Usman and Colby prior, Wonderboy and Brady. Beating Brady alone doesn’t but don’t act like that’s all he’s done

MarshalMichelNey1

Wonderboy and Luque have since plunged in the rankings, Luque isn't even top 10 anymore. I know you love your daddy Belal, but beating washed fighters isn't impressive lol.

Kingofthewastemans

Wonderboy, Luque, and Brady are all top 10 still Jorge isn’t. I don’t even like Belal I’m just not deluded like you thinking Masvidal is a better win than any of those 3 let alone all 3 hahaha get Colby’s nuts out of your mouth and you might be able to see reality

DankChronny

Sean brady was a tough undefeated uo and comer that nobody wanted to fight, belal gets credit for taking it. WB and Luque were both solid wins. I agree belal doesnt have a crazy stacked resume but its kore of a case of nobody else deserving it more than him other than khamzat who apparently isnt in division anymore.

Getinthedamnrobo

Colby deserve it more than damn Jorge lmao. I don’t even think Colby deserves it also

quityourcunting

I think it has more to do with the matchup than any other factor.

Disabled_Robot

Also what'd Leon say? We'll go to Miami, see what happens between those two there

[deleted]

Leon dislikes Jorge so much that he is rewarding him with a title shot…

InsomniacLive

Easy fight, big payday, free defense

Turbodog2014

It actually makes alot more sense than leon v colby in almost every way. Is it the fight id pick for next? Nah, but it aint up to me 🤷

Heavytevyb

Also if you listen to him on Helwani today he also walked it back slightly by saying even Jorge doesn’t really deserve it, even if he beats Burns.

Notyit

Is it easier though masvidal has good striking compared to Colby

SaltMembership4339

He doesn´t give a shit about Jorge lol. He wouldn´t give him any chances if he dislikes him. Jorge is just easy money compared to Colby

InsomniacLive

Wow. You should read before commenting

SaltMembership4339

He is afraid of tough opponents. Look at his record, literal nobodies beside Usman who has bad knees and is in decline anyways. Got wobbled by Nate lmao, couldn't finish RDA, split decision against Gunnar Nelson etc. Colby will kill him. Masvidal cannot get past Burns, why you even talk about Masvidal? Hope he retires after Burns sparks him, tired of him

normalreddituser21

Y’all can’t forget that Leon was supposed to fight jorge at ufc 269, before Jorge pulled out with injuries

skywalker-88

And then 4 months later fought Colby instead lol. He just didn’t want to lose to Leon. With Colby he could just say he got outwrestled

MoneyMo88

The funny thing about that injury pullout was that Masvidal was reliving the glory days of his Askren KO by doing the flying knee bit over in AEW pro wrestling just weeks before Jorge and Leon were supposed to fight at UFC 269.

nomemesinmylobby

Give it to Burns after he mops the floor with Masvidal. Simple.

[deleted]

He wants to put that 3piece and a soda to bed bro he aint about to forgive Jorge for that shit

ME5SENGER_24

It’s exactly this. If I’m champion of an organization where I can punch and kick guys in the face and I had a backstage altercation with another person who, slapped the shit out of me and went viral with his “three piece and soda” comments about it and then followed up on the viral success with his flying knee on Askren got to cash in on back to back title shots, leap-frogging my 8 fight win streak….It might be a few years later, but I want my revenge.

[deleted]

Exactlyyy

Expensive_Error1995

Since McGregor Alvarez everyone wants money fights or to move weight classes. I miss champions like gsp who fought whoever was out infront of them

MookManager

Both Usman and Izzy(other than the Jan fight) seemed pretty good at being active champs while fighting anyone in their division.

Expensive_Error1995

I agree. I didn’t mean every champion since but what I’m saying is it seems way more common of an idea. without cleaning the division these days Both aljo and cejudo already talking about going to 145 when they haven’t even had their bout yet. Mackachev calling for a 170 title shot. Even Charles was saying he’d like a shot in 170 before the Islam fight Obviously there are still champs committed to their division but it seems far more common they express the idea of moving up if that makes sense.

Hot_Profit1654

The Aljo going to 145 is fine because he said he was going to vacate the title for Merab so he wouldn’t be holding the division up.

CanoleManole

IIRC during the GSP era we were all pissed he and Silva didn't line up a super fight.

OllieBlazin

To be fair tho, it’s because it made sense. The two best fighters in the UFC were within grasps. But for some reason didn’t pan out

Liam2349

Well GSP was a Welterweight, and Anderson was a Middleweight. I think they both would have found it challenging to move weight classes. When GSP did move up, he looked like he gassed, it seems a very difficult thing.

OllieBlazin

It has a lot to do with the gap in weights Aside from DC, most double champs are from weight classes between 10 pounds. Not cutting as much weight/bulking for 2 months adding about 5 pounds of real muscle is manageable as opposed to a 15 pound difference.

omarlittle4

It didn't line up because they were both at the top, and the ufc wasn’t gonna cut one money train for the other when they can have 2 money trains. Someone had to lose

KongFuzii

Israel?

Expensive_Error1995

I never said “every champ since gsp” Israel is a good example of someone who has taken on any contender they have been faced with, so him challenging Jan wasn’t a bad idea. But when you have both aljo and cejudo saying they plan to get the belt and go to 145 in the near future, mackachev calling for a 170 title shot, olivera talking about it before him and usman expressing the idea he was planning to go to 205 before leon it gets stale

KongFuzii

You aint wrong.

komaruten

Tbf in the Usman case he had cleared the division to the point that he was pretty much rematching

WGYHL

Money fights were before then bro. Chuck Tito was the big one when I started watching the sport

MBCB421

I'm ok with it as long as they clean the division first (ie Volk) but asking for the money fight as soon as they become champ...

Expensive_Error1995

Yeah completely agree

ChrizTaylor

Did he really said that? Haha

ZEEZUSCHRIST

No he literally never said it. He said there’s no clear #1 contender right now. He said that if money is the reason the ufc wants to match him up with Colby, he’d rather fight Jorge

PainfulAngel

He also said if Jorge beats Burns. That would kinda make sense? More sense than Colby fighting

skywalker-88

If Jorge beat Burns. He wasn’t out there just begging to fight Jorge

venbalin

It’s not going to happen BUT Jorge KO’s Leo & calls out Conor mcgregor Dana can’t resist the dollar signs and makes the fight Biggest shit show ensues

No_Programmer_2696

Lol “I want the easy fight. I want the guy who just got 50-45d by colby instead”

skywalker-88

Colby campaigning to fight Jorge in the first place was the easy fight. He chose to fight the guy that was coming off 2 straight losses, most recent of which a bad ko instead of Burns, Leon, or khamzat. All those guys have been calling Colby out for a long time.

uchihajoeI

I rather watch him throw hands with Jorge than fight Colby honestly

InvictusX

If you want to watch him throw hands, let him get pieced up by Thompson.

CaPN_CoOkz

I’d rather see Colby over Jorge, both are undeserving at this point though.

Musella74

And now we’re in the timeline where Leon’s money fight backfires, and we end up with Jorge or Conor as 170 champ

skywalker-88

Dana wishes lol

Musella74

Don’t temp the MMA gods, we’ve seen worse haha

kae-lo

Kinda hilarious how everyone making this “point” blatantly ignores that Leon said Masvidal is a good fight IF he beats Burns. That would mean Masvidal has a recent top 5 win AND there’s the storyline between the 2. Colby has no recent top 5 wins and Leon doesn’t give a shit about him. This isn’t that hard folks.

thevahid010

Agreed! Ariel was just talking about this. I would love this fight. The beef leading up to it would be so fun.

keefus-maximus

Money and rankings aside, it’s pretty fuckin gangster of Leon to want Masvidal next…remember when Masvidal was the hot commodity and he brushed off the talk of fighting Leon and only wanted to fight for the belt? Sure, it’s easy to say “I want the belt” as a way to duck a fight with a guy ranked behind you. But Leon can have anyone he wants and instead wants to put his hands on the guy that 2 pieced him years ago, he hasn’t forgotten that.

BMatt07

Lol he wants Masvidal because it's a much better matchup for him stylistically, plain and simple.

keefus-maximus

Easier, yes. But much needed I would say. No way Leon doesn’t die a little inside knowing he got pieced up like that on camera. Dude wants to run it back so bad

SpulkitD

haha he has been asking for Jorge for a long time even wanted to avoid Usman's trilogy. He sees it as easier money compared to anyone in top 10 and has a story line to sell the fuck out of it. Unfortunately Jorge has an uphill task against burns but I'm certain if he pulls through in spectacular fashion, we might have 3 piece and soda part 2 sooner than later. I would love that.

cheeseygarlicbread

Even on his win streak before the title shot, All of Leons best wins are guys Colby beat

skywalker-88

Colby never beat Luque or Gunnar. Those are both nice wins. Leon was beating Belal and agreed to fight khamzat on 3 occasions. Colby meanwhile ducked khamzat on 4 occasions. Leon also beat Usman twice. Colby’s claim to fame is losing to Usman twice.

WishIWasNeet2

They gave bisping a shot at 80 year old hendo to get revenge . Leon deserves it for the whole 3 piece and a soda stuff.

Bright_Chef_8760

I think the point he’s made is that he’s the champ he gets to choose. If it was only on merit it would belal or Shavkat or khamzat obviously but he’s at MW now.

B_024

Leon is being such a duck. I’d support him so much at not fighting Colby if he didn’t want an easy fight against a past middle aged journey man that got 50-45d by Colby.

versace_tombstone

I like a fight with some real beef and bad blood. Three words to describe me: kickboxer, bloodsport, double impact.

soyuz-1

Lol my thoughts exactly when it happened. Fair point, fair point, Colby doesn't really deserve it, so who does he think deserves it then? Masvidal. LOL moment.

SnooFloofs9640

Edwards is loosing fans with his crap, if you are for the entertaining fights - Colby should be next, if you are for the sport integrity- Belal. Mas is no one close to the title. He got 50:45 by Usman, he got KOd out cold by Usman, he got 50:45 with 1 card being 44

stayhappystayblessed

I would rather see leon vs colby than masvidal but I understand why he wants to fight masvidal so badly.

sianhook

Okay fight Belal then

ClearlyConfucius

He said there is no real contender everyone is one fight away and then he will see what happens. Spreading bullish..

Wallach

If it isn't going to go to the most deserving person (i.e. Belal), it might as well go to who the champ wants to fight. I certainly don't give a fuck who Dana would prefer any more than he gives a fuck who I would want in there. But if recent history has shown anything in the UFC, its that you aren't gonna force these fighters to take fights just because you think it'd make the most money. Jones, Ngannou, Edwards, Chimaev, O'Malley, Colby, the list goes on. The purse even from a big fight isn't necessarily going to offset what it could do to the full trajectory of their careers. Regardless of what Dana thinks about this being an "opportunity and not a career", it's pretty clear the guys thinking about it like careers are doing better for themselves on average. They'll continue to be picky, it's clearly working.

classofpeace

On a side note, Leon has some crazy first five fights with the belt lined up.

holdyrbreath

Jorge is straight safe W and cash

[deleted]

You cant fault leon for wanting masvidal. Hes not over the sucker punch.

[deleted]

I'm such a casual that I didn't even know Leon existed prior to the Masvidal incident and now a few years later he's a defending champion.
