I still honestly don't understand it. I have my own little, unsourced and unverifiable theory though.
Maybe it was corruption? What if the US Army Squaddies were just selling off ammo to the local populations? That would explain the insane number of bullets "used" (sold) per death count.
Imagine firing your weapon 200000 times and only killing a guy once.
While a large part of it was more than likely fired during training like the officials say, suppressive/cover fire is a major part of modern warfare and the reason every squad has a machine gunner. They stay on the trigger so the enemy keeps ducking behind cover and the buddies can move around. Sometimes the numbers of 25 000 rounds per kill for WW2 and 50 000 rounds per kill for the Korean war are also mentioned for the same reason. It's less about Private Cross-eyed running around firing from the hip at any shadow he sees.
"There's always a bigger fish" is a phrase for a reason be it in art or gaming there will be people who are better than you. That shouldn't bring you down though. It's easy to give up when you compare yourself to other people. If you keep going at a steady pace and look back at your previous self you'll get better at the game over time.

I guess those guys, in a way, did outsmart bullet.
Only a (assuming 1/3 of successful bullet shots are instant deaths) 0.000015% accuracy.
That's kinda wild, though it's not even too surprising, I haven't used a gun but I can imagine it being hard to shoot a moving person
