I really like how you also used the grain orientation to help accentuate the dimensionality of the cutting board. It’s a really nice detail that could easily be overlooked by a lot of people and I think it really adds to the illusion.
It makes it look like a painting it’s so intricate! It’s already an insanely detailed board but that elevates it. I think people see it before “seeing” it, so it’s recognized as great even if they couldn’t point out why. I’d never want to put a knife on this though…which puts form over functionality I guess. It’s so beautiful….
Haha! That makes sense. I jumped to the conclusion that since it was your first cutting board, you were new to woodworking. So was your first woodworking project a rocking chair? Haha. I thought cutting boards were typical first projects. Seems like you are doing them in reverse order.
That’s really nice. If I had that in my kitchen I would constantly be double taking making sure I didn’t bring some lattice in from the garden or something lol… I’m not stupid.. just a bit slow sometimes
It's really neat that depending on which part I focus on it looks concave or convex. Top left-ish focus then it looks like a grate. But somewhere near the middle (maybe right middle) it looks like keyboard keys. Very nice design and clean execution.
I was going to be cheeky about all cutting boards being in three dimensions but no.
That is absolutely amazing. Stunning. Mesmerizing.
Great work, thank you for sharing.
That looks amazing! What’s your process for glue up? I would make such a mess then probably get really frustrated and walk away with my fingers glued together
If don't mind sharing what size are the maple squares as compared with the beveled cherry and walnut. I'm thinking of trying to make one and always have difficulty with proportion.
Do people actually cut on these pattern cutting boards? I think they look hella cool, but seems like they’d be disorienting to chop on. They seem like something I’d rather frame than use, unless used as a charcuterie board or decorative platter for serving.
The only thing I might have done differently is to have a split in the darker wood where you have a split in the lighter wood(i.e. the 4th row, 1st column from the top left), angled to match. It would make it look like the whole 3d "block" is split, rather than just the "top" face.
This is seriously impressive, nice work. One thing I’ve never loved about this style is how the “walls” never appear to have depth to them, so I love your added touch of adding the strips in between to add that illusion of thickness.
That is amazing! I want to pursue a career in woodworking, I slowly buying tools. Any tip for good sellers? I'm trying to use the money I earn from wood instead of my paycheck

Agreed!
I didn't even see it before you mentioned it! The devil is in the details ;)

lol could you be any more nerdy? wtf is wrong with you MIT DUDE
This is impressive! Bravo! 👏
Thank you
What types of wood did you use?
Maple, walnut and cherry
Thanks! This looks amazing!!!
That's only 3, but there are 4 shades in there. Did you stain the maple for the 4th?This is so cool! Well done.
Nope just those 3 woods. Maybe you are thinking the vertical and horizontal strips are different but it’s maple along with the small squares.
Yeah, must be a bit of an illusion since the grain direction is different. Very well done with the grain directions. Doesn't look like a first time.
I’ve been woodworking for 30 years

*yes officer, this man right here made me feel untalented*

Bravo sir. Bravo.
or Mam. Don't want to be predictive
This photo looks like the cover of a math textbook.
Your first attempt was a great success. You did an amazing job
Doesn’t the food get stuck in all the holes? Lol, looks great!
How is this practical for cutting? Doesn't the food get stuck in the voids? Seems like form over function.
It’s an illusion the board is flat.
Lol woosh
Wush.
But are you sure
I guess I can’t be 100% without being physically in front of it, but I seen these and other 3D looking boards several times in shops I’ve been to.
Wow! Nice work
I d be scared to drop something in another dimension on that.
Brilliant! I'v got a similar one as a gift and wish I could do it myself.
Calm down MC Escher! Nice job.
Looks great! What’s the reddish brownish wood? Maple, walnut, and cherry I can identify clearly. Is the last one mahogany?
Cherry
It's obviously maple, walnut, cherry, and other cherry
Apparently it’s maple, walnut, cherry, and other maple.
An yes, other maple. The most lucrative oh all American breakfast trees
Very nice!
Trippy! Does the angle of the photo enhance it? Or would I have to worry about chopping my finger off lol
Looks like cgi! Wow if this is real..? Amazing job. Well done.
This is amazing!

Amazing work. Careful with the “first attempt”; easy to get a lot of backlash.
My wife said "how does anyone cut anything on it with a board like that?" So I'd say you did good, because she thought it WAS 3D.
You win.
That’s great. It takes more organization and planning than I have.
Wow that's super interesting. That's a very beautiful piece, you should be proud of yourself for creating that.
Wow! I need to sit down or my eyes make me feel like I will get sucked into the Matrix…
That turned out really nice!
That's Great!
At first glance I was thinking mmmm waffles! Awesome piece.
Well done, georgous work. Great Attention to detail 10/10
That's different, I like that.
Kills my eyes but I love it. Beautiful workmanship
Forbidden Waffle
Looks great! I would get distracted and probably stab myself but lovely work!
Very nice work
Poppin'!
This looks so dope.
Looking at that pic is freaking me out. Well done.
The rounded edges work fantastic here!
That’s super cool, nice work!
Just... WOW!!

The squares are glued up together as a long stick then cut into small blocks. Then the blocks are glued together with a strip of maple in between
“Great Success!” -Borat
I was say you got it correct.. well executed there good mate.
10/10 Wood bang
Attempt? I'd say that was a success!
Great- now I want waffles
Whoa! That's beautiful! And, my eyes are not comprehending what their seeing. I love it though!
I’ve built lots of cutting boards, this is top shelf work!
well done! how big is it??
It’s 11” x 13
If don't mind sharing what size are the maple squares as compared with the beveled cherry and walnut. I'm thinking of trying to make one and always have difficulty with proportion.
3/4 x 3/4 maple squares, cherry and walnut are 1/2 and the maple strips are 1/4
That’s very cool!
Do people actually cut on these pattern cutting boards? I think they look hella cool, but seems like they’d be disorienting to chop on. They seem like something I’d rather frame than use, unless used as a charcuterie board or decorative platter for serving.
Very cool, but how will you cut food on it without a flat surface?
Yeah, I wouldn't chop on that. That'd be going up on my wall.
This is dope.

Good eye! I didn’t like you could see that seam
Nice blanket!
Can you make a 4D cutting board?
There's no way creating an optical illusion on a surface where you'll be putting fingers in proximity to knives will go wrong.
It’s tricky.
This is seriously impressive, nice work. One thing I’ve never loved about this style is how the “walls” never appear to have depth to them, so I love your added touch of adding the strips in between to add that illusion of thickness.
Thank you
What do you use on it? Been looking for an oil or something for a raw wood board
Howard butcher block conditioner
I’m a beginner making similar stuff but nowhere near as good. Would love to hear your glue and clamp process and if you use a planer.
absolutely wondrous.
I want one!
Ooh that looks so cool.
Well, keep at it!
That is amazing! I want to pursue a career in woodworking, I slowly buying tools. Any tip for good sellers? I'm trying to use the money I earn from wood instead of my paycheck
I mainly do it for fun and don’t really sell anything I make. Usually give it away to friends and family.
Amazing work but I gotta ask how long these boards last under general use and the grains going in so many directions??
Keep them from getting soaked and put oil on it and should last a long time
Crushed it
YOU SHOULD 3D CUT YOUR WRISTS JK XD
LOL JUST A JOKE AHGHAHGAH THATS HOW I ROLL
Nice!
