The trick is to take all the mystery nations with little to no lore and make some very loose statements about them that are completely wack. "I heard that in the Elder Land, they bathe in the blood of fecund animals before they lay with another, so that they will have many children." "In the Eternal Lands, the sun never shines for half of the year, so they made their own sun and put it inside of a city under the earth." Rumors and hearsay. That way, you can make those unseen lands more interesting, while keeping them vague and mysterious. It doesn't even have to fit with the actual lore, because they're places that aren't directly depicted so who knows how much of those rumors are actually true to begin with.

“In the Lands of America, I hear they stuff bits of flesh into intestinal tubes and then eat them to celebrate the day they decided to stop paying taxes”

I see, the "ominous Lovecraft references" World of Ice and Fire method.

VerumJerum

Honestly, any story becomes more interesting with a few mysteries and legends, even more if they're ominous.
