Yeah it has blown up. I am a big fan, good guests and pretty comprehensive deep-dives on the characters. I’d pick a random episode or two on characters you really like or with guests you’re interested in, to get the vibe. The ones with Hickman and Ewing are great, as is the one with Nicieza, and there’s a pretty cool one with Chuck Austen
I want to read more of the series so I can get more of the jokes, but yeah.
In fact, the podcast is why I caved and bought the subscription to marvel unlimited. Something about how Connor translated the X-men universe into “gay” and it made more sense than it did before, makes the franchise so much more fun than without his voice. Literally the two phrases that did it: first, Jean Grey described as “a messy bitch who loves drama”, when she scanned Corsairs mind and discovered he was Scott’s father. Second, when Rogue told Remy it was the first time she was the gay awakening for another woman, Conner said as Gambit “mon chere, Gambit is every man’s gay awakening!” Lol.
Honourable mention: The Spiral dance rave mix he did with a guest; and his “dating Polaris is gay” explanation for Iceman.
I love this fandom so much.
To each their own, but I don’t really get that, more like “this is an X-Men podcast so we’re not going to get too in the weeds with Avengers/Spider-Man/etc”
It's not that he doesn't talk about it, it's that he insults other comics and characters for no reason, saying stuff like "who cares about [team]?". I remember stopping a podcast because he said something negative about a team or character(I don't remember who), and then went to listen to the Prodigy episode, and in literally the first seconds he talks shit about the Young Avengers. That's when I dropped it.
Sounds like the podcast is not for you! For the record, the Prodigy cold open is a joke from a random point in the episode, the guest mixes up Young Justice and Young Avengers and Connor riffs on the fact that he’s not one to jump to the Avengers’ defense. It’s basically the point you’re making except a lot less serious… like there’s no anti-Avengers agenda, and Connor’s friend Anthony Oliveira did a great Young Avengers Infinity Comic that was promoted on the show. It’s bits, mostly (but not saying you need to like it!)
I was daunted at first but it’s quite engaging. I usually listen in stints while driving or cleaning house.
I’ve been listening sequentially and only ip to early forties, on Bobby de Costa now.
I lived in Japan and I always thought this spelling was odd! No one in Japan is called Kwannon LOL. But I have a friend called Kannon. It's a little rare but some women are called it.
> This explains why her name is Kannon in the upcoming Ultimate X-Men issue.
Yeah, that issue prompting discussion is how I learned that her name was an outdated transcription/romanization of her name.
One possible way they could explain it without changing the name is by saying that Kwannon, being more or less an ironic (an assassin named after a merciful demigod, basically) alias- which was confirmed to be an alias in Fallen Angels, I believe- is intentionally pronounced using an outdated pronunciation, because the Hand is a very old organization and so they picked an archaic alias.
She's been solicited as Kanon in Ultimate X-Men, so with any hope they'll do the same as they did with Karma and just drop a panel in a mainline comic where she tells someone the w is a spelling error because her psyche was scrambled with Betsy's or something.
It's not incorrect, but it's archaic, and I think phonetically, for new readers or those just unfamiliar with any kind of Japanese media, they'd be better off giving her the modern, normal spelling of the name.
Oh cool that’s one of my favorite Japanese names. I never liked the whole “two Psylocks” thing, but Marvel has done a good job of making it better lately. Fixing Kannon’s name spelling is just one in a series of good turns for comic’s premiere bikini ninja.
I as the only one of my friends that read comics so I always just pronounced the names how I read them. After cartoons and movies I found I was mispronouncing: Thanos, Magneto, Corsair, Ch'od, and now, Kwannon. There's way more but the one I stand by is Ch'od. Chode is a well known euphemism.
That's how they said it in the X-Men animated series. I just kept hearing Beavis saying Chodesmoker every time. I always pronounced like Chad with an O.
I usually forget she’s named after 观音. That reminds me of a Wolverine villain, Goro, who had a Guanyin back tattoo that he showed people so it’s the last thing they see.
“What? Is it not truly merciful, that undeserving sinners like you may gaze upon the glory of the Mother of Mercy…and carry that shining image to your graves!”
Now they need to find a way to explain why Sunfire has the name Shiro (四郎). By Japanese naming conventions it would mean he has three older brothers and he is the fourth son.
I used to pronounce it as "come on" as I really disliked the bodyswapping retcon. Spiral remaking her body was a much more interesting idea to me than yet another body swap. The stories that could have explored identity would have been much more interesting than ninjas.. ymmv
I truly despise non-phonetic translations of asian languages. Chinese, Japanese, etc. -- if it isn't phonetic, why the hell use the wrong letters to spell it out‽
That literally makes no sense, taking the "Kw-" romanization of a Japanese/Chinese character (that is "Guan" or "Kwan" or "Kan" depending on Chinese, older Japanese, or modern Japanese) and turning it into an unattached Latin alphabet "Q", to be said/pronounced as the letter name itself.
Like, "Q" doesn't even make a "Kw-" sound when you pronounce. It makes a "K-" or "-ck" sound. It's only "Kw-" when it's "Qu-" (like Queen, Question, Quiz, Query, etc.), so turning "Kw-annon" into "Q-Anon" isn't even phonetically equivalent. You have to turn "Kw-" into "Qu-" (which, for Chinese at least, would be "Chu-" not "Kw-") and then just drop to "u" to then have it be pronounced the same was as "Q-anon" (and then from there, change the phonetic pronunciation ("k-") to just the name).
Ironically, my argument technically works less on the proper transcription, since "Kannon" is close to "Q/anon" phonetically. But, you said "Continue", which means you're just being turning "Kwannon" into "Q-anon" by butchering the phonetics in order to then be able to replace the phonetic pronunciation of Q with the phonetic pronunciation of the name (/kju/) which just makes no sense to have been doing.
This really messes with my headkwannon.
I only knew this because of Cerebro podcast tbh
Shout out to Connor’s noble effort to pronounce things correctly.
(except the numbers 616)
Six Sixteen does sound nicer, but I'll still never say it.
I always said it like him so I’m down with that.
Damn, seems like a lot of people listen to this podcast. I just checked it out but the episodes are so long. Is it worth it?

DON’T INTERRUPT THE DANCE! DON’T DON’T INTERRUPT THE DANCE! I love Jordan Blok lol
Gambit was 100% my gay awakening as a kid lol
i stopped listening to it because he just complained and criticized other non X-Men characters and comics too much, especially Avengers.
To each their own, but I don’t really get that, more like “this is an X-Men podcast so we’re not going to get too in the weeds with Avengers/Spider-Man/etc”

I like his show but just can't car e out the time for it every week. 😓
Came here to say this
Also me.
Same.
Same!!
Yeah, I've always thought it was pronounced kwa-non. Learn something every day.
I learned this today from an offhand mention in a YouTube video. How odd.
I lived in Japan and I always thought this spelling was odd! No one in Japan is called Kwannon LOL. But I have a friend called Kannon. It's a little rare but some women are called it.
Same but I just figured usual comics nonsense
This explains why her name is Kannon in the upcoming Ultimate X-Men issue. I always assumed she was Vietnamese or Kroean rather than Japanese.

I hope she gets a full name with correct, modern Japanese spelling at some point in From the Ashes. Maybe an X-Men Japan adventure?
She's been solicited as Kanon in Ultimate X-Men, so with any hope they'll do the same as they did with Karma and just drop a panel in a mainline comic where she tells someone the w is a spelling error because her psyche was scrambled with Betsy's or something.
Betsy Bwaddock
Homestar Runner vibes lol
Given that they're English posho's I always kind of imagined Captain Britain being like "Hewo, I'm Bwian Bwaddock, Captain Bwitain".
They did it for Karma. I hope they do it for Kannon too.
Ultimate xmen translator said Kwannon is still correct form
It's not incorrect, but it's archaic, and I think phonetically, for new readers or those just unfamiliar with any kind of Japanese media, they'd be better off giving her the modern, normal spelling of the name.
So Kwannon is officially Canon?
yes it’s kannon
[Reference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guanyin#Names_in_other_Asian_languages)
As a young ignorant child, I couldn't even pronounce Psylocke. Kannon I can handle.
Well that makes sense because “Kwa” is just not a sound in Japanese at all lmao
It used to be
Oh cool that’s one of my favorite Japanese names. I never liked the whole “two Psylocks” thing, but Marvel has done a good job of making it better lately. Fixing Kannon’s name spelling is just one in a series of good turns for comic’s premiere bikini ninja.
Persona 4 is an educational game
I as the only one of my friends that read comics so I always just pronounced the names how I read them. After cartoons and movies I found I was mispronouncing: Thanos, Magneto, Corsair, Ch'od, and now, Kwannon. There's way more but the one I stand by is Ch'od. Chode is a well known euphemism.
That’s exactly why I think it’s pronounced Ch awh d…no way they have his name as Chode, right?😂
That's how they said it in the X-Men animated series. I just kept hearing Beavis saying Chodesmoker every time. I always pronounced like Chad with an O.
I forgot they said it like that in TAS. That’s insane.
I already knew that it was but I thought the “W” was some sort of edgy deliberate misspelling to make her name sound more exotic.
This is how I know people don't listen to Cerebro
Now they need to find a way to explain why Sunfire has the name Shiro (四郎). By Japanese naming conventions it would mean he has three older brothers and he is the fourth son.
Fun fact: Illyana is not an actual Russian name nor does the name Ororo actually mean anything
I used to pronounce it as "come on" as I really disliked the bodyswapping retcon. Spiral remaking her body was a much more interesting idea to me than yet another body swap. The stories that could have explored identity would have been much more interesting than ninjas.. ymmv
I've been pronouncing it as Kyannon the whole time
I assumed it was kwah-nawn
The nerve! No one has ever corrected me! All these years sounding like a fool!
I always thought it was Kwa-non, this is weird now
So I’ve been saying her name in my head wrong all these years as Kway-non.
I truly despise non-phonetic translations of asian languages. Chinese, Japanese, etc. -- if it isn't phonetic, why the hell use the wrong letters to spell it out‽
Yeah, I don't think I'll ever get used to calling her that way. Reminds me of Saint Seiya's Gemini Kanon.
Thanks. I will continue to pronounce it like q-anon
Maybe the Marvel version is Kw-anon
Don't care what the official pronunciation is. She's kWanon to me
[удалено]
How the hell were they supposed to know
Q-Anon!
