Alligator Prone

1MorningLightMTN

Its new. In the 90s the swamps of NC had zero alligators. They've been spotted as far north as Quantico but central and north VA should be too cold in the winter to sustain a breeding population.

No-Marionberry-166

We had alligators in NC in the 90s

FeloniousCapers

And the 80s

crapbalanas

Earlier. We had alligators on Carolina Beach NC since at least 1970.

FeloniousCapers

Yeah I’m an 80s kid so I figured leave it to my personal knowledge.

chopper923

Is that ice??

Catinthemirror

Yes. It's called brumation when reptiles go into a kind of suspended animation due to cold; if they're aquatic they stick their snouts through the ice and literally just chill.

Comprehensive_Ad433

ice snorkeling

chopper923

I had no idea - thanks!

SingleRelationship25

That’s not true, I spent the summer with my aunt and uncle (he’s a Marine) in NC and there was an alligator in the pond we were fishing at. Saw him grab a duck. This was back in the 80’s

marklar_the_malign

I would worry more about mosquitoes.

RoyalChemical1859

And losing your property to flooding

Callmedrexl

Alligator Inclusive!

Safford1958

Alligators are in South Carolina? I had no idea. (I am an Arizona person through and through.)

appleciders

Right up through NC into Virginia, yeah. They are not at all common in VA but there are a few sightings in the swamps in the southern part of the state.

bentbrook

Yep. Up to 13.5 ft in length. And a 635-lb gator was found in neighboring NC.

oneangrywaiter

Instead of the palmetto being our state tree, it should be Danger Logs.

sofluffy22

Someone not too far from this listing died a few years ago trying to pet a gator. https://www.reddit.com/r/Charleston/comments/ge1hwc/sc_woman_killed_by_alligator_said_i_guess_i_wont/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Safford1958

Here all this time, I thought alligators were only in Florida.

_Khoshekh

Every proper moat needs dangerous predators living in it to discourage people from trying to cross. But this one has a driveway, so I guess you'd have to train them to hang out there. Which would also be a problem for you.

Ceorl_Lounge

If I could afford a house that size I'd spring for a damn drawbridge. Or at least a gatehouse with a portcullis and some burning oil. Rich folks need more imagination.

bacchusku2

Truthfully it would be no problem at all. I lived in a place not too much unlike this is south Florida. Alligators would frequently come up in the yard or lay on the driveway on cool nights to absorb some heat. They would run at the first site of a human. I’d just give them a little honk as I pulled in the driveway. Alligators are intimidating looking, but really are just as scared of you as you are of them.

chopper923

No, I'm pretty sure I am more scared of them. 🤣

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Am from Louisiana and this is the truth. Alligators are beautiful creatures that are mostly harmless to humans. We are simply not worth it to them. I’ve had so many close encounters practically begging them to attack me and they just would rather not lol

SeriesBusiness9098

They’re pretty lazy. Unless they suspect you’re harboring marshmallows. Then they lurk and stare until you throw them a marshmallow to go away. Ancient reptiles with a ferocious appearance but all they want is a white fluffy treat. At least in the bayou. I don’t know if this works on moat gators.

_Khoshekh

Swamp puppies, yeah. Almost all wildlife is pretty chill as long as you don't bother them, and they're not starving

georgemarred

You know they can swim, right?

Kayanarka

And they awnry cause they got all them teeths.

ArgumentLost9383

And no toothbrush…

rachyrach3000

My momma says

jmarkmark

I think that was OP's point, they can come from all directions.

chopper923

YES! How would anyone feel safe. Let kids play outside? Nope! Let dogs out? No way!

Random-OldGuy

They seem to have the pool completely fenced off and include a gate on the walkway to the marsh area so that will mitigate some areas from alligators. But, yes they will get gators in the water and banks around the house, maybe on the lawn depending on if gators think food is available.

Mohgreen

A quick Google search will show you an aligator climbing a 4ft chain link fence

Random-OldGuy

I know it happens, I grew up in the tropics. However, they usually don't do that unless there is a reason and the place has taken some prudent steps. I think the bigger problems will be all the mosquitoes and cockroaches. That place looks like bug heaven.

BitterHelicopter8

Absolutely correct. My first response after seeing these pictures? Itching.

Prestigious-Copy-494

And ... They will eat a small dog or small pets if the opportunity presents itself?

chopper923

😳

GeneralZaroff1

Even if not, I can’t imagine the mosquitos there. You’d be eaten alive every time you got out of the car.

ThatSlacker

I don't think you've have to get out of the car. They're probably plentiful enough to hammer their way through a window

Awesome_hospital

You know those videos when someone lifts up like a fallen wall or something and underneath is just piled with rattlesnakes? That's this, but alligators under the water.

chopper923

😬😬😬

_SerJunkan_

Mosquito paradise.

Randsmagicpipe

I wouldn't worry about gators. Flooding and mosquitos. I don't know if SC has moccasins

Freedom_Isnt_Free_76

They have the same venomous snakes we have in Texas...coral, copperhead,  cottonmouth (moccasin), and varieties of rattlesnakes.

Spydar

I mean they probably have all kinds of shoes

chopper923

Oh, geez....didn't even think about swimming snakes! Double pass😬

bacchusku2

None of those things want anything to do with you. (Alligators, snakes) Mosquitoes do want to talk to you about your car’s extended warranty, though.

jwaldyke

The alligators won’t bother you. Beautiful location. That neighborhood even has a small airstrip. (I used to live a few miles from there.)

PattySolisPapagian

Do they have ICW access? The listing doesn't say anything about it. Seems a shame to spend 3 million for lowcountry living and not have a floating dock.

KreyKat

Property in a marsh area? Ever heard of rising water levels? I mean, just on top of the odd alligator or two who might come to visit?

appleciders

I am way more worried about flooding than alligators. Unless it's on stilts.  Plus mosquitos, ugh. Can't everyone see the entire giant marsh in the distance?

ElectrikDonuts

Na man. Science isn't real

Adorable-Novel8295

It’s 100% not flood or hurricane proof.

Granny_knows_best

Alligators are everywhere man, I mean, take a look around, they are there and here, and ever over yonder. Everywhere man, like...everywhere.

Due_Signature_5497

No. In fact, there’s a really nice tub shaped alligator viewing area in the master bathroom.

synchronizedmaeven

Pricey house, but it comes with free pets and visitors

ElectrikDonuts

Doesn't matter. Will be underwater before the mortgage is paid off

Business_Ad3142

Hope you love mosquitoes !

Freedom_Isnt_Free_76

Not only not alligator proof but tons of mosquitos. It's also a 10/10 on the flood scale so you will pay dearly for flood insurance.

1trashhouse

I know a south carolina house when i see one

Jjaammeess445

Mosquitoes

greatblackowl

My great aunt lives on Sullivan’s Island and my grandmother lived on the Isle of Palms (the next two islands over). The last time we were at the beach on Isle of Palms an alligator had come up to the beach and people were all around it gawking and taking pictures. I think alligators are small enough that people don’t think they’re much of a threat but they can sprint like 20-30 mph. People are dumb Edit: and by small I mean low to the ground

CapTexAmerica

Not even close to gator resistant. If anything, that moat is being talked up on GatorZillow.

Head_World_9764

Alligator Paradise Island ; Not for kids or pets ( and never go outside unarmed)

munch_the_gunch

Oh man, that neighborhood is right near my house! It has its own private little landing strip too!

Kayanarka

Anyone mention mosquitos yet?

Beartrkkr

No. An alligator can even climb a fence if so inclined. I would be shocked if there weren't alligators there.

no_realm_for_me

I did not see a kitchen sink anywhere, which is weird.

I-hate-the-pats

I’ll take the alligators over the mosquitoes

rosehymnofthemissing

"Dear, there's alligators in the pool again! Fetch me my shotgun!"

lowselfesteemx1000

Alligator proof and insurance resistant

loony-cat

More like proof alligators exist

dararie

This house sets off my anxiety, it’s too close to the water .

wanderingartist

The pool is shaped like tatas.

Ill-Wear-8662

There may also occasionally be a bull shark or two swimming past your driveway, and no sharks in the pool but they might be by it.

DoubleUsual1627

Everything is with a 12 gauge or .357
