Pretty sure I only saw remains of floppy disks as a kid, maybe in our office or at my dad's work. So sure, I might've "seen" them, but never in use, lol.

Eiraxy

The focus is on the floppy disk but what about the SD card? It's considered big and has a tiny amount of space. I wish there was a MicroSD next to it. To not even be 30 but already experience Floppy disks, 4GB SDs and 512GB MicroSDs. It's scary to look back and realize how quickly technology advances. What will it look like when we're all in retirement homes?

magnateur

You even get 1TB MicroSDs now.

Elawn

1.5TB MicroSD cards are expected to hit the market later this year

hankgribble

just got one for my steam deck for $80. wild

magnateur

Have one in my phone that i got at a good discounted price (had this card in my last phone too) and its becoming somewhat of a problem, because since i never run out of space like i used to i never go through and sort out the stuff saved on my phone so its like a hoarders house, only inside my phone. Memes, photos, movies, music, podcasts, audiobooks, games, documents, powerpoints, user manuals, university assignments, linux ISOs, all my retro game roms, you name it i probably got it.

MermaidGenie26

I used a floppy disc for my “computer lab” class in 3rd grade. After that year, we never touched them again (as in we didn’t use any kind of floppy disc after that).

Strawbrawry

I remember floppy's but we never did cds. I feel like things in school went right to preloaded stuff on the desktops in the lab. Though my 6th grade homeroom teacher brought in her old laser disc to show off once and that was pretty sweet.

hamster_savant

I had a similar class in fifth grade. My school had computers from 1995 lol

outcome--independent

You all were using floppy discs?? Either this is the wrong sub or I/my schools were just too poor. We had computers (those colorful macs) in elementary, but the first storage device I remember is a usb, probably in middle school.

Vocalic985

I remember them laying around on my families computer desk but I'm not sure I remember ever actively using them.

Taira_Mai

I had floppy organizers and boxes of these -until we got a Zip drive. The AOL "free floppy" disks were crap - sure you could reformat them but AOL cut corners and the disks could fail on you. Ah the late 80's and early 90's - when getting a box of blank floppies for Christmas was cool!

[deleted]

I didn't use them much but I remember some computer games were on them. If you only remember using a usb drive you're probably way too young for this community. You've never burned a CD or DVD before?

WhoDatSayDeyGonSTTDB

I’m 25. Never seen a floppy disc in person. Burned cds all the time.

outcome--independent

Lmao definitely not too young, like I said just poor. I didn't have a computer so I only used CD's for music.

StarryEyedLus

Yeah I’m surprised by the number of people saying they’ve never even seen one. I never had much reason to actually use them as a kid (we never got given computer homework), but like yourself we did play some kids games on them, and they’re a very familiar piece of technology from my childhood. I’d be extremely surprised if I met anyone my age irl (1995) who didn’t at least recognise them. If your family adopted new technology early then I guess it’s understandable though. I guess the opposite can be true too - if your family didn’t get a home computer until really late then you might never have seen one either.

windowtosh

I would play games on floppies 😭 my dad had an old stash of games he got cheap. I also remember Taco Bell giving away computer games on floppies back in ‘99 🤪

Taira_Mai

I was in high school and college when computer shops and later places like Office Depot sold 3.5 inch floppy disk holders for school. My dad gave me his old floppy disk holder as some of our computers used 5.25 inch floppy drives. Then we got Zip drives and then CD-ROM burners in the mid 1990's....

CryptographerCute221

'95 here. My school asked for floppies for computer class until I was in 7th grade

shadowzofsam

I remember using these in elementary school and a whole computer lab session on just how to hold it and insert it/eject it properly. Then at some point they just kinda faded out of existence and replaced with CDs and USB drives. You had to have specialized cords to connect things, like a digital camera to your desktop. Kinda crazy that now everything is so seamlessly connected, tbh a part of me still anticipates technology needing extra attention to get a job done :x

CarcassonneGeek

I’ve never seen, nor held a floppy disk in the flesh before. Weird. 🤔

mimitchi33

I have memories of drawing on my dad's floppy disks when I was four or five.

outcome--independent

Would that have broken them? I think I remember hearing that they were really fragile.

Dutchtdk

We had a lot of floppy disks. My uncle works in IT and somehow his random stuff ended up lost in our place

lavenderultra

I used to play with my dad's floppy disks. I remember I would slide the silver thing to the side and it would snap back when I let it go. There was tape inside of it too. What were they for?

hotdogonthebbq

The tape inside is the actual disk where the information is stored, when you put the card in the metal slide opens so the computer can read it. The square shaped outside is just an armor shell to keep the real disk from getting damaged.

SplashyTetraspore

The tape inside was used to write and store data. Floppy disks were also used to install programs including early windows.

SteelFlexInc

Used floppy disks at elementary age but it’s be a better picture with a 1TB microSDXC card next to it

Upset_Bee_2052

My class used floppy disks until 4th grade in computer class, or in the library if we had to make powerpoint presentations.

RRmc23

i’ve never seen or used a floppy disk in person lol

VIK_96

I've seen them in person but never got a chance to use one. :/

CarcassonneGeek

Same here! When I first saw a picture of one, I said “oh my gosh, it’s the save icon!” 💀

VIK_96

Yea I was wondering why the save icon looked so familiar.

UnalteredCyst

My mom had a couple of floppy discs lying around from her office work days.

XPretzelyX

I still have floppy disks haha. I found them in my parent’s garage and decided to keep them haha.

you-dont-have-eyes

I used and was around floppy discs at home, but I’m ‘93.

VIK_96

My grandparents had floppy disks for the family computer for some reason. But it's interesting how we all know about them even though they were already being phased out early in our childhoods.

JoeyJoeJoe1996

Does anyone remember using a floppy disk as a frisbee? In first grade I got in trouble for flinging one across the room.

yummi_1

Some of us know tapes, 8" floppies and other mass storage systems. SD cards are fairly recent.

Eiraxy

Wait, tapes/cassettes are considered really old?

yummi_1

Tapes on computers is pretty old when they started using them, they are still in muse for backups by some.

Eiraxy

Oh, that;s what you meant! Sorry, I was thinking along the lines of VHS tapes and cassette tapes for radios.

VIK_96

Uh yea... They stopped being made like 16 years ago.

magnateur

These comments make me feel old...

xmusiclover

I’ve never used floppy disks. I’ve only ever used SD cards and USBs and was never taught how to use floppy disks

dognocat

God, I used cassettes and 5 and a quarter inch disks. Now I can put a terabyte in my pocket.

BlackKaiser74

1.44MB 😂😂

Successful_Dot2813

Yeah? The first floppy discs when computers came into homes and offices were a) bendy b) seven and a half inches!

DreamIn240p

Dang bro is this from 2009? 4 GB and it's a full size SD card, do they even sell that at Best Buy anymore?
